After finishing Winthrop, Liz went back to Estill High to teach high school math & physics — this is where she met her husband, Boyd, and they married in 1963.
Boyd was born in Fairfax, SC, graduated Allendale-Fairfax High School and from Clemson University in 1962. He went back home to work in a company in which his father had been a partner. As Liz said they married in 1963 just in time for school to start.
After they were married, they moved to Clemson, SC where Boyd attended graduate school. He received his Master’s in Math in 1965. Liz taught school in Liberty, SC while Boyd was in graduate school.
Then their next step was Virginia Tech where Boyd received a Ph.D. in Statistics in 1969. During their tenure at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, Liz worked at home typing a textbook for a statistics professor. Also, both of their children were born there – one 6 weeks after they got there and one 6 weeks before they left.
Then they moved back to Clemson where Boyd was a professor in Statistics. They were there for 2 years this time and then moved to Charleston (actually Mt. Pleasant) SC in August of 1970. They are still here. Here in Charleston, Boyd was a professor in the Biometry Department at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Liz spent my time trying to be a housewife while the children were small and not in school. What she discovered is that God did not put her here on this earth to be a “housewife” — she is not good at it. She would find something else to do.
She started playing tennis and got to the point of playing once or twice a day — she would always take the children with her and they would play with other children outside the tennis courts while the mothers played.
When the youngest child started to school, Liz got her real estate license.
Liz has been a real estate broker since 1976 in the Charleston, SC marketplace. She worked for Howell & Associates for 2 years (1976-1978), then opened The Liz Loadholt Co. with her husband, Boyd who was on the faculty at the Medical University of SC. In 1982 they purchased the Coldwell Banker franchise for the Charleston area and grew their company from 8 agents to 150 agents within a year.
They built the #1 real estate company in the Charleston market. In 1986 Coldwell Banker purchased their company from them and they began working for corporate Coldwell Banker.
In 1992 they resigned from Coldwell Banker and opened up The AgentOwned Realty Co.— this is a concept of Boyd’s and Liz’s — one where the sales associate owns 100% of the dividend stock of the company (Boyd & Liz maintained the voting stock). The AgentOwned Realty Co. has grown to over 500 agents in 14 offices in SC.
